【書評】※本書第11章のみの部分書評．
Charles Darwin夫妻の長女 "Annie" こと Anne Elizabeth Darwin は，1851年4月に療養先の Malvern で死んだ．まだ10歳だった．Desmond & Moore『ダーウィン』（工作舎，1999年）によると，主知医 James Gully は「“腸チフスの特徴を伴った胆汁症熱”が死因」（上巻，p.508）と死亡診断したとのこと．
著者 Keynes は，本書の第11章「The Destroying Angel」で，この症状〈bilious fever with typhoid character〉がいったいどのような病因に由来するものなのかを推察する．結論は「結核」である．当時の子どもに特徴的だった重篤な粟粒性結核が Annie の死因だったのだろうと彼は推論する（p.200）．1840〜50年代のイギリスでは結核が大流行しており，子どもの死亡の5/6は結核に起因すると計数された（p.201）．結核が「破壊神」（the destroying angel: 201）とみなされたのも無理はなかった．
もちろん，結核の特効薬や有効な治療法が当時まだなかったことは，福田眞人著『結核の文化史』（1995年，名古屋大学出版会）と同『結核という文化』（2001年，中公新書1615）に詳しく報告されている．当時名声の高かった医師 James Clark と同じく，Gully もまた結核は伝染病ではなく，むしろ環境や生活習慣に起因するとみなした．Darwinの主知医でもあった Gully は，Annie に対して当時ひろく行われていた結核の「水療法」を試みたが効果はなかった（p.206）．
死病と恐れられた結核は，当時のイギリスでは（後の日本と同様の）「ロマン化」されつつあった（p.204）．Darwin夫妻は Annie の病気が結核かもしれないと気づいていたのではないかと著者は示唆している（p.206）．そして，その原因が近親結婚にあることを Darwin は密かに怖れていた．
Annie の死後，ダーウィンは病気に対する関心を深め，とくに病気と系統関係との関わりおよび病気と遺伝との関連性について調べた（p.207）．Darwin はどうやら結核が遺伝病ではないかという懸念を深めていたようだ．Clark の弟子で，医療統計学の祖となった William Farr の医療統計書を読んだ Darwin は，子どもの死亡率の推移について考えをめぐらした．そして，Farr に手紙を書き，近親結婚と病気との相関の統計も取るべきだと進言している（p.210）．
植物病理に関する情報のやりとりをしていた Feldinand Cohn から，Robert Koch が発見した炭疸菌の写真（1877年）を見せられた Darwin は，伝染病の原因が微生物にあることを理解し，「伝染病の起源が解明されたならば科学にとっての大勝利だろうと私はここ二，三十年の間自らに言い続けてきました．ようやくその大勝利を見ることができて本当にうれしい」（p.211：1877年の Cohn 宛て書簡）と書き送った．その Koch が結核菌を同定したのは，1882年．結核に関する Darwin の積年の疑惑と苦悩が解決するのは，Annie の死から実に四半世紀後のことだった．
Annie の発病から死に致る経緯を書いた第9〜10章は，本書の「山」に当たるが，続く本章では，Annie の死の背後に広がる当時のイギリスの疾病観や医療文化が述べられており，参考になる．他のダーウィン伝を読んでも Annie の死因そのものについては現代医学の観点から詳しく書かれているものはなく（ある？），蔓延していた結核が思わぬところで，Darwin家と関わっていることに興味を覚えた．なお，Emma Darwin の姉である Elizabeth Wedgwood は脊椎湾曲の障害をもっていたが，その原因もやはり結核であって，彼女はおそらく脊椎カリエスを病んでいたのだろうと著者は述べている（p.206）．
