本書はいわゆる「生物分類」の本ではありません。むしろ、つくられた分類カテゴリーのもつ文化的な「倫理性」と社会的な「権力性」に視点が置かれているのが私の関心を呼びました。

Part 1 では、分類を支えるインフラすなわち社会学的基盤について論じられます。Part 2 では、分類の社会的インフラの例として、病気の分類システム(ICDすなわち国際疾病分類システムを例に取る)および南アフリカ共和国におけるアパルトヘイト時代の人種分類を挙げて、その社会的影響ついて議論されます。続く、Part 3 では、医療看護の分類システムの検討を通して、分類行為の実践的価値が重要であることを指摘します。最後の Part 4 では、情報科学と社会科学との境界領域に分類学は活路を目指すべきであるというメッセージを掲げます。

まだ最初の部分しか読んでいませんが、各章のタイトルには大いに心惹かれるものがあります。
