Nelson Goodman は、カテゴリー化の基準としての「類似度」の陥穽について、数量表形学が勃興しつつあった1970年代初期に早くも指摘しました。当時の体系学者は必ずしも哲学に通じていたわけではなかったので、Goodman の指摘は生物体系学の世界にはそれほど浸透しませんでした。しかし、生物学哲学への影響は大きかったようです。
本書では、Nelson Goodman の中核論文２編を復刻し、それらをめぐって生物学・社会学・音楽学・心理学などさまざまな視点からの論考が含まれています。
序論において、分類学への記号論理学の導入は対象となるクラスの形成すなわちカテゴリー化の議論をなおざりにしたという弊害をもたらしたと編者たちは指摘します。論理化される「前」のカテゴリー化の様相を調べる必要がある−その契機となったのが、Nelson Goodman の主張であるとの立場です。ヒトにとってのカテゴリーのタイプ（natural kindsなど）、カテゴリー化の時間的変動、そしてカテゴリー化の妥当性の評価方法（類似度とか射影性などの基準）が本書における主な論点です。 分類の論理だけでなく、分類を行なう「主体」（すなわちヒト）とそのカテゴリー化の様相を議論しようという本です。
「社会科学」というサブタイトルはきっと不要だっただろうと私は思います。
