歴史生物地理学の方法論をひとつひとつ解説しながら，相互比較することを目指した教科書．
第１部で，個々の手法の説明は簡潔にまとめられている代わりに，関連文献は網羅されているので，学生向けの教材として適しているように思われる．とりわけ，過去十年間にラテンアメリカのスペイン語圏で展開されてきた歴史生物地理学の理論と応用にわたる仕事が多数引用されていて，この地域の活力をうかがわせる内容になっている．
続く第２部では，最近のトピックス――分子生物地理学，保全生物地理学，そして外来生物問題が論議されており，歴史生物地理学の今日的な意義を例証する構成となっている．
付録Ａの系統学解説は節約的すぎる気がするが，付録Ｂにリストされている生物地理学ソフトウェアはきっと読者の役に立つものと思う．文献リストは網羅的でたいへん参考になる．
著者の Jorge Crisci さんは植物学者．生物学教育にも関心があり，私は10年ほど前に，筑波大学で開催された生物学教育に関する国際委員会で来日されたときに初めてお目にかかりました．長年にわたり Willi Hennig Society の主要メンバーとして活動．サンパウロでの Hennig XVII（1998年）でも生物地理学シンポのオーガナイザーをされました．
