日本橋・丸善で立ち読みして，買うしかないな〜と思っていた本．イタリアの自然誌研究の中心である Accademia Nazzionale dei Lincei の歴史をたどった大著．“Lincei”という言葉が，本書のタイトルにもなっている「大山猫の眼（Lynx-eyed）」であることを初めて知りました．1603年に創立されたこの組織については，アカデミアのＷＷＷサイト：

美術史が専門の著者はフルカラーの図版を次々に見せながら，このアカデミアが博物誌の伝統ともなる博物画のスタイルに大きな影響を与えたことを示そうとします．ガリレオ・ガリレイがこのアカデミアの創立会員として加わり，他の会員の知的指導者として深く関わっていたのですね．大山猫の「眼」は，数々の生物の解剖図や拡大図を生みだした――ウィンザー城で門外不出となっていた数々の Lincei の博物誌遺産を掘り起こした著者の力作だと思います．とにかく，図版がきれい．
